How to Self-Publish an AI-Written Novel on KDP, Apple Books & Kobo

You've got a finished manuscript — maybe one you wrote with AI the right way. Now comes the part that quietly defeats most first-time authors: turning a document into a book that's actually live and buyable across the major stores. Here's the whole path, without the guesswork.

Step 1: Produce a valid EPUB

Retailers don't sell Word documents. The universal ebook format is EPUB, and "valid" matters — a malformed file gets rejected at upload. A good EPUB has:

  • A proper table of contents mapped to your chapters.
  • Clean, semantic chapter breaks (not manual page breaks).
  • Embedded metadata: title, author, language, description.
  • A cover image bound into the file.

If you're formatting by hand, run the result through an EPUB validator before you upload anywhere. One invalid file can cost you a day of rejected submissions.

Step 2: Get a cover that survives a thumbnail

On every store your cover is first seen at the size of a postage stamp. That means: a legible title, strong contrast, and genre signalling that a browsing reader recognises in half a second. Match the visual language of the bestseller shelf in your category — thriller covers and cozy romance covers are not interchangeable.

AI image models can now produce store-spec cover art at the correct dimensions, which removes the last expensive bottleneck between manuscript and listing.

Step 3: Write metadata that gets found

Your title, subtitle, description, categories and keywords are your on-store SEO. Retailers rank and recommend based on them. Write a description that hooks in the first two lines (that's all a shopper sees before "read more"), choose the most specific categories you qualify for, and use keywords real readers actually search.

Step 4: Disclose AI honestly — per store

This is not optional in 2026, and the rules differ by retailer:

  • Amazon KDP asks you to declare AI-generated content during publishing (it's a disclosure to Amazon, not necessarily shown to buyers).
  • Apple Books, Google Play, Kobo and Barnes & Noble each have their own evolving policies on AI-assisted work.
  • Audiobooks have separate, stricter narration-disclosure expectations (more on that below).

Handle disclosure honestly and per-store. It protects your account, and readers increasingly respect transparency more than they penalise it.

Step 5: Publish where your readers actually are

You don't have to pick one store. A typical wide-distribution setup covers:

  • Apple Books — large, author-friendly, direct EPUB upload.
  • Google Play Books — huge reach, straightforward for indies.
  • Kobo — strong internationally and with library systems.
  • Barnes & Noble Press — the major US retail alternative to Amazon.

Each has its own dashboard, pricing and territory settings. Going "wide" from day one means no single platform owns your catalogue.

Step 6: Don't forget the audiobook

Audiobooks are the fastest-growing format in publishing, and skipping them leaves money on the table. AI narration has made a full audiobook something you can produce at near-zero marginal cost — we walk through it in turning your novel into an audiobook.

The shortcut

Every step above is doable by hand — and collectively it can take longer than writing the book. That's the gap Instawritr closes: it produces the valid EPUB, a store-spec cover, the metadata, honest per-store AI disclosure, and a full audiobook, then stages everything for Apple Books, Google Play, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Spotify for Authors and InAudio. One command in; a catalogue-ready book out. See pricing — it's a one-time purchase that runs on your machine with your own keys.
