Most people who try to "write a novel with AI" hit the same wall around chapter four. The first few thousand words are exciting. Then the model forgets a character's eye colour, resurrects someone who died two chapters ago, and starts every paragraph with "In the dim light of the tavern." What began as a book becomes a pile of disconnected scenes.

The problem isn't the model. It's the workflow. A single long prompt cannot hold an 80,000-word story in its head. Writing a real novel with AI is an engineering problem, and once you treat it like one, the results stop reading like AI.

Here's the workflow that actually ships finished books.

Start with a synopsis, not a prompt

A one-line idea gives the model nothing to be consistent about. Before any prose, expand your concept into a real synopsis: premise, protagonist and their want, the antagonistic force, the world's rules, the central mystery or conflict, and roughly how it ends.

This is the seed everything else grows from. Ten minutes here saves you ten chapters of drift.

Build a story bible the model must obey

The single biggest upgrade over "just prompting" is a story bible — a structured reference the model reads before writing every chapter. At minimum it holds:

  • Characters: names, physical details, voice, motivations, secrets, and arcs.
  • World rules: geography, technology or magic, factions, timeline.
  • Tone and style: point of view, tense, comparable authors, things to avoid.

When the bible is authoritative — when chapter 38 is written with the same character sheet as chapter 3 — continuity stops being luck.

Track the open loops with a ledger

A bible captures what's static. Novels also have things that change: a planted clue, a brewing betrayal, a cliffhanger that needs paying off. Keep an open-loop ledger that records every thread you open and whether it's been closed.

Draft chapter by chapter, with context that fits

Never ask for "the whole book." Draft one chapter at a time, feeding the model only what it needs: the bible, the ledger, a beat outline for this chapter, and a short summary of the previous one. This keeps every chapter inside the model's effective context window, where quality is highest — instead of degrading as the document grows.

Run a QA loop to kill the slop

This is the step almost everyone skips, and it's the one that removes the "AI smell." After a chapter is drafted, score it against a rubric:

  • Continuity: does anything contradict the bible or ledger?
  • Prose quality: repeated sentence openers, filler adverbs, purple description, telling instead of showing.
  • Pacing and stakes: does the chapter move the story, or just fill space?

Then revise against the score and re-check. A single automated QA pass typically lifts a draft's quality score by ten points or more — the difference between "clearly AI" and "I'd read this." In practice, a good loop takes a pilot chapter from a 72 to an 82 without a human touching the prose.

Don't stop at the manuscript
